The previous record for the most money paid for a basketball jersey at auction was held by Kobe Bryant’s Lakers uniform during his rookie season, which was surpassed by the amount that was paid for Michael Jordan’s jersey.

At an auction held on Thursday, September 15, the jersey worn by Michael Jordan during the opening game of the 1998 NBA Finals sold for more than $10 million, making it the most expensive piece of game-worn sports memorabilia in the history of the auctioning industry.

The previous record was set earlier this year at Sotheby’s with the sale of Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” shirt for a whopping $9.3 million. Maradona was an Argentine soccer legend who played for Argentina.

“There has been palpable excitement from not only sports fans, but collectors alike who are eager to own a rarefied piece of history,” said Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectables. “In the weeks since we announced the auction, there has been palpable excitement from not only sports fans, but collectors alike who are eager to own a rarefied piece of history.”

“Yet again, tonight’s record-breaking result… firmly establishes Michael Jordan as the unrivaled GOAT (Greatest of All Time),” demonstrating that his name and unparalleled legacy are just as important today as they were almost 25 years ago.

Jordan’s jersey was predicted to sell between $3 and $5 million at Sotheby’s “INVICTUS” auction and ended up surpassing the previous record for a basketball jersey at auction, which was set in May when $3.7 million was spent on Kobe Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers jersey that he wore in his rookie year.

It also set a new record for any item of Jordan sports memorabilia, surpassing the previous mark of $2.7 million set by the sale of his autographed relic card from 1997–1998.

There were a total of twenty bids placed for the jersey that Michael Jordan wore during the legendary “Last Dance” season. The jersey was given its name after the ESPN and Netflix documentary that will be released in 2020 and chronicle Jordan and the Chicago Bulls’ quest to win their sixth NBA championship in eight years.
