JD Shaw of Hoops Hype reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers have signed Nate Hinton to a 10-year deal. The undrafted, third-year wing is anticipated to push for a roster spot out of training camp, but he will likely begin the season with the G-League connected Cleveland Charge, who acquired his rights last week in a deal.
Hinton has spent the last two seasons with the Dallas Mavericks in 2020 and the Indiana Pacers in 2019-2020. Hinton has spent time with the Long Island Knicks and Santa Cruz Warriors in the G-League during the 2020 season before joining the Fort Wayne Mad Ants last year. During his two years in the G-League, Hinton has averaged 15.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.9 steals on.451/.370/.876 shooting.
Hinton, at 6′ 5″ and 210 pounds, falls in between a big two-guard and an undersized wing, a type of player the Cavaliers continue to gather. Throughout his time in the G-League and college for Houston, he has proven to be a terrific rebounder and three-point shooter. Both are skills the Cavaliers urgently require on the wing. We’ll see if Hinton can accomplish enough in training camp to distinguish himself from other guys on the team with similar skill sets.
To make place for Hinton as a training camp invitee, the Cavaliers have waived Chandler Vaudrin. After injuring his ACL while playing for Cleveland’s Summer League squad in 2021, Vaudrin inked a camp deal earlier this month. Hinton is invited to training camp alongside Sharfie Cooper, Jamorko Pickett, and Mamadi Diakite.
