Michael Jordan’s sneakers – A pair of Nike Air Jordan 1 sneakers from 1985 that were worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan fetched the highest price ever paid for a pair of sneakers at auction.
Christie’s auction house announced on Thursday, August 13, that a pair of Michael Jordan’s game-worn sneakers had sold for $615,000, surpassing a record that had been set just a few short months before by the sale of another pair of the basketball legend’s shoes.
The legendary NBA player was wearing a pair of Air Jordan 1 High sneakers at the time of the dunk that broke the glass backboard in the exhibition game that took place in Italy in 1985. The game was between Italy and the United States.
Caitlin Donovan, head of handbag and sneaker sales at Christie’s, which coordinated the auction with Stadium Goods, remarked that “this is the original shoe with an actual piece of the backboard, a piece of glass, in the sole of the shoe.” Stadium Goods contributed to the auction as well.
Jordan scored 30 points while sporting shoes with the Chicago Bulls’ red and black color scheme, which are size 13.5. The Chicago Bulls are Jordan’s current squad.
Although the transaction shattered the record set in May when a pair of Air Jordan 1s sold for $560,000, the new auction landed below the projected range of $650,000 to $850,000. The previous record for an Air Jordan 1 sale was $560,000.
The record-setting sales highlight the skyrocketing market value of objects identified with the retired basketball superstar since the release of The Last Dance, a documentary that chronicles the story of Jordan and his Chicago Bulls. The Last Dance was produced by ESPN and Netflix and chronicles Jordan’s time with the Bulls.
It also serves as more evidence that even the lowly shoe has earned a position of respect in the world of wealthy collectors, right alongside other, more traditional types of collectibles.
